Research Paper Quick Check

Startling and informative opening

“BAM!” He pulls the trigger, sending their lifeless body tumbling towards the floor. This boy is just one of the many Americans who believed the only way out of their misery, is through suicide. Suicide rates have been rising drastically, and are now one of top three causes of death in the US. Innocent lives are being taken everyday, because they feel it’s their only way out. But, many suicide victims lack the ability to look at the long-term perspective. Of course, not all suicides can be prevented, but many can, if people would just listen and catch signs of suicide and depression before it’s too late.

Quick summary of main question that I mean to answer or reason I think this topic is important
How can we prevent suicide? Every 80 seconds a teen attempts ton end his/her life. We lose hundreds of thousands of people a year due to suicide. And to think, some of those lives could be saved. If we can notice signs of depression and suicide early enough, we can provide those people with therapies that can help cure them, and save their life. You have an influence of suicidal people. If you help them through their hardships, and have them know you care. You might just save their life.

Two or three most interesting things I learned from research

· Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death in the US.
· 60% of suicides are committed with guns
· Senior citizens have a higher suicide rate than any other age group

Confirmation or rejection of one or two commonly held beliefs about this topic

· All suicide people want to die.
False, most suicide victims use suicide as a cry for help. They actually want to live, but not under these circumstances.
· Teens that have already attempted suicide will not do it again.
False, half of the teens who make once suicide attempt will try again.

Something to connect the topic to the reader's life so that he/she will care

Most likely you knew or will come in contact to a suicidal person in your life. First, you must know their suicide attempts are NOT your fault. They rest only upon the suicidal person’s thoughts and actions. But, there is a chance that you may be able to save their life. If you catch their signs early enough, you can get them the help they need, keeping them from making one of the worst decisions of their life. You MUST remind them that suicide is not the only option.
Also, the current suicide rate is 4x that of 1950. IF we continue increasing like this, think of how many lives suicide will take 50 years from now. They could be your children or even your grandchildren.

A closing surprise...intriguing fact, quotation, or discovery from my own research
Many people face day after day deeply considering suicide, while 5 million others have already attempted this short cut through your life. So many people die everyday from suicide affects, leaving their family and friends lost and in grief.
